Navigating the New NC eCourts System for Your Triangle Divorce

By Ryan Short | White Oak Legal

If you are starting a divorce in Wake, Chatham, or Orange County, the way you interact with the court system has fundamentally changed. As of late 2025, North Carolina has fully transitioned to the eCourts (Odyssey) system in all 100 counties. Physical paper trails are being replaced by digital portals, and your "day in court" now begins behind a screen.

At White Oak Legal, we believe technology should simplify the legal process. Here is your guide to navigating the digital divorce landscape in the North Carolina Triangle.

Note: While eCourts makes filing easier, it does not change the law. Whether filing in Raleigh or Pittsboro, the legal requirements for a one-year separation remain strictly enforced.

Wake County eCourts Update

In the Wake County Justice Center, the sheer volume of cases means that the transition to eCourts was essential. For Raleigh and Cary residents, the move to File & Serve means:

  • Real-Time Updates: We can now see judge's orders and opposing filings the moment they are uploaded.
  • Reduced Delays: Digital processing removes the "mail lag" that historically added weeks to an Absolute Divorce timeline.

Filing in the Chatham County Odyssey Portal

For families in Pittsboro, Siler City, and Chatham County, the eCourts Portal provides a unified experience across District 15B. Whether your case is heard at the historic courthouse in Pittsboro or in Hillsborough, the system is now identical.

  • Accessibility: Residents no longer need to travel to the clerk's office just to check a case status.
  • Local Insight: We utilize the Odyssey Portal to track specific Child Custody and Child Support hearings efficiently.

Key eCourts Terms for Pro Se Litigants

  • File & Serve: The secure portal used to upload legal complaints, motions, and responses.
  • Portal: The public search tool to find court dates and record summaries.
  • Guide & File: An automated interview process for simple legal forms (Best for uncontested matters).

Orange County Digital Divorce Guide

While the Portal can tell you when your court date is, it cannot negotiate an Equitable Distribution of assets or draft a complex Alimony agreement. The "Guide & File" tool is a helpful start, but it often lacks the nuance required for high-asset or high-conflict cases common in the Triangle, particularly in Orange County.

At White Oak Legal, we use these digital tools to move your case faster, but we rely on our years of experience in the North Carolina courts to ensure your rights are protected.
